While more known for his work as a poet, Thomas Hardy was novelist who published most of his works in the late 1800s.
“Under the Greenwood Tree”, Hardy’s second novel, is widely considered on of his “lesser novels”. However, it is also considered a critical precursor to his following novels, which were his greats.
This book was published for the Holt Publishing Co. of New York as part of the “Leisure Hour Series”.
The inside of the front and back covers are covered in advertisements, with the front ads being dated “June 23d, 1874”.
