Antique Very Rare 1/6 Plate MoP Photo Case w/ Back Painted Glass & Daguerreotype

  • Excellent Example of a Fancy Antique Photograph Case
  • This case, also called a “casket” has a wood body with Mother of Pearl Scales on leather covers.  The front cover has a small glass window with a painting, “Coy Young Lady”.
  • A similar, smaller 1/8th plate case is recorded by Berg as 6-316 [very very rare]
  • The interior has a lovely green velvet pad. and holds a 1/6 Plate daguerreotype of 3 young sisters holding parasols.
  • It is interesting to note that these types of rare cases were all individually made, typically one of a kind.
  • There are similar styles, inlay, etc.  however finding an exact duplicate is very unlikely.
  • Great rare addition to your collection!

Very good overall condition for it’s age and fragility. The MoP scales show some light scratching and minor dust, and a couple of tiny chips along the edges. The original painting shows some crazing and some flaking loss on the top half. The spine is original and intact, however the interior is detached and is held on by the exterior leather. The interior leather shows some light discoloration. The included dag shows some mild dust and light scratching, and some discoloration along the mat edges.
