Description
Up for auction is a rare antique cast iron “Two Frogs” mechanical bank. This is an ORIGINAL, NOT REPRODUCTION, bank. J & E Stevens Co., designed by James H. Brown, patented 8/8/1882. Place the coin on the young frog. Press the lever, and the old frog will open its mouth, catch and swallow the coin that the young frog kicks from its position.
The action of this particular bank appears to function well, however, I did notice that the smaller frog’s leg did not rise when the larger frog’s tail in depressed. The leg will lift manually. I am under the assumption the there is a spring that is loose or not connected. I would rather someone who knows what they are doing repair rather than risk doing this beauty any damage.
As can be seen in the photos, the original paint is still in very good condition for an item of this age. Even the tongue has retained it’s red color. There is no rust on the bank, and the castings are all in excellent condition, with no cracks in the iron. Some chips on the paint. This is a very nice piece!
Measures 4 1/4″ inches high and is 8 1/2″ inches long. It is about 3 1/4″ wide.
