  • Nice Example of a Fancy Antique Photograph Case
  • This case, also called a “casket” has a wood body with Mother of Pearl  & Abalone Scales on leather covers.  The front cover has a small glass window with a painting with a beautiful rural countryside house scene.
  • The interior has a lovely green velvet pad, and holds a 1/9th Plate ruby glass ambrotype of a young man.  Small paper behind photo is marked in pencil “E.W. Dyer–Saco–Jan 21 1866”  Saco likely refers to Sace, Maine
  • It is interesting to note that these types of rare cases were all individually made, typically one of a kind.
  • There are similar styles, inlay, etc.  however finding an exact duplicate is very unlikely.
  • Great rare addition to your collection!

Description

Fair overall condition for its age and fragility. The MoP and Abalone show some moderate scratching and dust, with some mild chipping along the edges. Some of the scales are a little loose, and the back cover has a repaired section-see photos. The original spine has been repaired. The included ambrotype shows some light scratching.
