Antique Late 19th Century Hand Carved American Folk Art Cane Yellow Dog Democrat

$400.00

I am pleased to offer a one-of-a-kind piece of Democratic memorabilia.  This hand carved cane features a two-sided “Yellow Dog” handle as well as a carved rooster and donkey on the top half. The piece measures 35″ in total length with a handle width of 2-1/8″ at the top.  The shaft begins with a diameter of approximately 3/4″ that graduates slightly to 5/8″ at the tip.  Dates to the late 1800’s/early 1900’s.

The term “Yellow Dog Democrat” was applied to Southern voters who voted solely for Democratic candidates, with the term commencing in the late 19th century.  These voters would allegedly “vote for a yellow dog before they would vote for any Republican”.

The Donkey symbol first began in 1828 when Andrew Jackson was running for president.  He was immediately labeled a “jackass” for his populist views.  Jackson in turn embraced the nickname and used the Donkey on his campaign posters.  After being elected, the Donkey was used as a symbol of Jackson’s stubbornness on the issue of re-chartering the National Bank.  The Donkey symbol began being used 10 years later in Political Cartoons.

The Rooster began as a symbol for the Democratic Party in Indiana during 1840 when the Whig Party began yelling “Crow Chapman Crow” at Joseph Chapman, a Democratic candidate for Legislature.  The Democrats embraced the slogan as complimentary as opposed to a slogan of ridicule of their candidate, and the Rooster symbol was adopted at that time.  “Stamp The Rooster” is a term used for voting a straight Democratic ticket.

This rare cane features beautifully hand carved details throughout the top handle.  It was found at an old Florida estate, but other that is of unknown origin.  The end of the cane has been recently covered with a black “Nev-A-Slip” rubber tip.  There is a crack running through the center of the Dog handle on one side and a thin crack on one dog nose, as well as a few very small chips on the shaft, but otherwise it’s fantastic.

This unique piece displays very well and is quite a conversation starter.
