  • c. late 1880s-early 1890s
  • Photograph of American Spiritualist Luther Colby (1814-1894).  Classically posing like an editor/publisher with his finger marking a page in a book.
  • Colby was the co-founder of the journal “Banner of Light”, which began in Boston 1857 along with friend William Berry. He was the editor until his death in 1894.
  • Banner of Light was the longest running and most influential publication of its kind in the 19th century. It even had its own resident medium, Mrs. Frances Ann Conant
  • Card marked Elmer Chickering, 21 West Street, Boston, Mass.
  • Back is signed “Luther Colby” which I believe is his own signature.
  • Measures approx. 4-1/4″ x 6-1/2″

Description

Photograph shows some moderate speckled staining and light scratching from age. Card shows some mild edge wear and some light discoloration as well. One of extremely few photographs of Colby.
