ID’d as Lewis Northey Tappan, and likely his wife Elizabeth Sanford
Lewis N. Tappan (1931-1880) was a notable pioneer of Colorado, a politician, and an abolitionist.
We was from the prominent Tappan family of Massachusetts, his father being Col.Ebenezer Tappan
Lewis is noted as the operator of the first store in the Colorado Territory, and was actively involved in the government of Denver.
He was also one of the first 3 white men who entered the “Garden of the Gods”, and was involved in the naming.
First photo shows Lewis and his wife, likely sometime in the late 1860s/early-1870s after they were married.
The second photograph is his portrait, hand-signed on the back “Lewis N. Tappan. Jan. 19th-1877”
