The history behind the senior canes at Dartmouth goes back as far as the earliest days of the college. They were carried as status symbols, as the Senior class had earned the title of “gentlemen”.  This became challenged by the freshmen class in the late 1800s, which lead to “cane rushing” and the diaspora of the canes to lower classmen.  They became very popular again with seniors in 1887.

Here is a great historic article from Dartmouth about the history of the canes:

Description

Very nice overall condition, showing some mild scratching and some small nicks to the wood from age/storage. The Indian head shows some loss to its original finish. The brass collar has heavy patina, and the brass/iron ferrule shows moderate wear from use.
