1894 Scottish Gordon Highlanders Military Snuff Tobacco Mull Horn LT Col Mathias
Antique 1894 Scottish Gordon Highlanders Military Snuff Tobacco Mull Horn ID’d
I am very pleased to offer this Very Rare,
The front of the horn has a engraved sterling silver shield that reads: “Presented to the Officers Mess by Lt. Col. H. Mathias 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders 1894”.
Lt. Col. Henry Mathias, also known as the Hero of Dargai, earned his most famous title a few years after this snuff mull was crafted. In 1897 he lead the assault on the Heights in Afghanistan and inspired his men to claim victory.
This mull comes with all of its original implements: There is a hammer to tap the side of the mull should the snuff adhere; a bodkin to pierce and separate it; a rake to collect the snuff into the little spoon or shovel; and a hare’s foot to brush loose particles from the nose or lip.
The interior of the mull retains its original cork insert, and the original cork on the underside of the lid (both pieces of cork are in good condition.)
The eagle leg stand bears the British Hallmarks for Edinburgh, Scotland. As well as the 1894 Edinburgh Date Letter.
This Antique Snuff Mull is in excellent condition, and I would consider it Museum Quality. There is very light scratching to the horn from the over 100 years of age, and mild tarnish to the sterling (more notable on the implement chains). The cork is a little worn, but is solid and not crumbling. The interior of the mull has a lovely tobacco remnant aroma.
