Earnest Paul Lehmann founded his toy company in 1881 in Brandenburg, near Berlin, Germany.  Lehmann toys were and still are easy to recognise because of their creative construction and clever actions. The dancing, climbing, crawling, or rolling sections of the toys were powered by a wind up fly wheel drive mechanism.

Lehmann was one of the few German toy makers to survive the World War 1  and became one of the most prolific toy-making companies in the world.  Toys were mass marketed, with low affordable prices by using a then newly-developed thin and cheap type of tin plate.
